A British soldier was killed in an accident Tuesday in northern Baghdad’s Al-Taji army camp, according to an Iraqi military source.

"The deceased soldier had served in the Second Battalion of the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment [of the British army]," Iraqi Army Captain Meqdam Mohamed told Anadolu Agency.

Mohamed went on to say that the soldier, whose name was not given, had been killed during a routine training mission, not in combat.

One of the functions of Britain’s military presence in Iraq is to provide local security forces with training within the context of Iraq’s ongoing fight against the Daesh terrorist group.

The Iraqi Ministry of Defense has since opened an investigation into the soldier’s death.

The British Ministry of Defense, meanwhile, also confirmed the incident without identifying the deceased soldier at the request of the latter's family.
