Three fires broke out on Sunday at the Borouge petrochemicals plant in the United Arab Emirates from falling debris after a “successful” interception by air defense systems, the Abu Dhabi Media Office stated.

"As part of the ongoing follow up to the previously reported incident at Borouge petrochemicals plant, caused by falling debris following the successful interception by air defences, authorities confirm that three fires broke out and emergency response teams acted swiftly to bring the situation under control," the office said through US social media company X.

No casualties were reported and damage assessment on the site is ongoing, it added.

The office also called on the public to rely only on official sources for information.

Earlier in the day, the office said that authorities were responding to several fires that erupted at the site, adding that "operations at the facility have been immediately suspended while damage is assessed."

The incident comes as hostilities in the region have escalated since the US and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran on Feb. 28, killing over 1,340 people to date, including the then-supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets. Iran has also restricted the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
