ISTANBUL
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa visited the coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus on Sunday for the first time since assuming office.
Crowds gathered to welcome him in a display of popular support.
State-run Syrian television reported on Telegram that “President Ahmed al-Sharaa received a warm welcome from the good people of Latakia, reflecting the unity of Syrians under a wise and just leadership.”
Latakia, with its deep historical roots and rich heritage, is embracing a new phase of reconstruction and stability as part of Syria’s path toward a brighter future, the broadcaster added.
Sharaa also visited Tartus.
Meanwhile, the official SANA news agency reported that the president met with prominent figures in Aleppo province, including Afrin and its countryside, earlier in the day.
His visit to Aleppo came a day after he met with community leaders from Idlib province, SANA added.
On Dec. 8 last year, Syrian factions seized control of the capital Damascus and other major cities, ending 61 years of Baath Party rule and 53 years of Assad family dominance.
Bashar Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on that day.
On Jan. 29, Syria’s new administration appointed al-Sharaa as transitional president, announcing several major decisions, including the dissolution of armed factions, security agencies from the previous regime, the parliament, and the Baath Party, while also abolishing the constitution.
