The Sudanese army on Saturday continued advancing in the states of North and West Kordofan in the south of the country after launching attacks on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) positions along the El-Obeid and El-Khuwei-Al-Nahud, according to military sources.

Military sources told Anadolu that army forces carried out ground assaults backed by heavy artillery strikes on RSF concentrations in areas west of El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, including Al-Ayara, Abu Qaoud, Abu Sunun, and Umm Sumayma.

The Sudanese military sources said the attacks “inflicted heavy human losses and destroyed several RSF combat vehicles.”

They added that “the army also used drones to strike RSF gatherings along the El-Khuwei-Al-Nahud axis in West Kordofan, destroying fuel trucks used to supply RSF military operations.”

These attacks come days after the army made advances in areas north and west of El-Obeid as part of its push to take control of North Kordofan State.

On Friday, the Sudanese army repelled a new RSF attack on the town of Babanusa in West Kordofan and managed to drive out RSF and Sudan People’s Movement forces that attacked the town of Kartala in South Kordofan.

It comes amid days of intense clashes across the three Kordofan states—North, West, and South—between the army and the RSF, as part of a war that erupted in April 2023.

Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF controls all five states of the Darfur region in the west, except for some northern parts of North Darfur that remain under army control.

On the other hand, the army controls the majority of the remaining 13 states in the south, north, east, and center, including the national capital of Khartoum.
