RAMALLAH, Palestine

The Israeli shekel late Tuesday lost 1.4% of its value against the US dollar after rocket attacks by Palestinian factions on Tel Aviv.

The exchange rate of the Israeli shekel in evening trading was 3.29 against the dollar, down from 3.252 at the beginning of trading in the morning.

Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip carried out "unprecedented" rocket attacks targeting the capital Tel Aviv, killing an Israeli woman and wounding dozens in an initial toll, in addition to material damage.

The exchange rate of the shekel in evening trading was the lowest seen against the dollar in four weeks.

This evening, warning sirens sounded across Israel.

Meanwhile, education at schools was suspended and the Israeli civil aviation authority announced it was suspending flights at Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv amid continued rockets attacks.

Tensions have been running high in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem since last week, after an Israeli court ordered the eviction of Palestinian families.

Palestinians protesting in solidarity with residents of Sheikh Jarrah have been targeted by Israeli forces. ​​​​​​

The death toll from attacks in the Gaza Strip rose to 28, with 152 wounded, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war and annexed the entire city in 1980 – a move that has never been recognized by the international community.
