Israeli forces kill Palestinian, detain 5 in West Bank raid
Army says raid was launched in coordination with Shin Bet security service
JERUSALEM/ISTANBUL
A Palestinian was killed and five others were detained in an Israeli raid in the West Bank city of Jenin, the army said on Tuesday.
A military statement said that Sultan Al-Ghani was killed in an overnight joint operation with the Shin Bet security service in southern Jenin.
It claimed that Ghani was responsible for a hammer attack that left an illegal settler dead in the Kedumim settlement near Qalqilya in August 2024.
Five more Palestinians were detained during the Israeli raid in Jenin, the army said.
The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed that Ghani, 22, was shot dead in the village of Marka south of Jenin, and his body was withheld by Israeli forces.
The Israeli army has escalated its attacks in the West Bank since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023.
At least 1,080 Palestinians have since been killed and nearly 11,000 others injured in attacks by the army and illegal settlers in the occupied territory. More than 20,000 people have also been arrested.
In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
