JENIN, Palestine

Several Palestinians were detained by the Israeli army during military operations in Jenin city and the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank, which continued for the second day on Wednesday, amid reports of explosions, gunfire, and clashes that injured six people.

The Israeli forces stormed Jenin city in the northern West Bank on Tuesday evening, besieged the Jenin camp, and clashed with Palestinians.

The Israeli army has declared the city and the refugee camp closed military zone, Jenin Mayor Nidal Obeidi told Anadolu on Wednesday.

He pointed out that Israeli forces have surrounded several hospitals in the city, citing reports of gunfire and explosions.

Military bulldozers demolished several streets, and this infrastructure vandalism has become a daily occurrence whenever the Israeli army raids the city and camp, he added.

The Israeli army has detained several Palestinians during the operations, he said.

Medical sources in Jenin told Anadolu that six Palestinians sustained minor injuries in the Israeli army operations.

Tensions have been high across the West Bank since fighting broke out on Oct. 7 between Palestinian groups and Israel in Gaza.

A total of 242 Palestinians have since been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank in addition to more than 2,850 injured, according to the West Bank-based Palestinian Health Ministry.
