JERUSALEM
In a landmark ruling, an Israeli court has ordered the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority (PA) to pay compensation to Palestinians detained for allegedly collaborating with Israel, the Israeli media reported on Friday.
“The Jerusalem District Court has ordered the PA to pay a total of 13.2 million Israeli shekels [roughly $3.5 million] in compensation to dozens of suspected ‘collaborators’ who have been systematically tortured in the PA’s jails,” The Times of Israel reported.
The court also ordered the PA to award compensation to another 52 Palestinians detained on suspicion of communicating with the Jewish state.
According to the newspaper, the plaintiffs hope Israel will be able to collect the required funds from the PA.
The Palestinian security services in the West Bank occasionally detain Palestinians suspected of collaborating with Israeli security agencies.
The PA, for its part, has yet to comment on the court ruling.
