Iraqi factions pledge full support for Iran against potential US attack
Fears grow of potential US strike against Tehran amid rising tensions following anti-government protests in Iran
ISTANBUL
Iraqi factions pledged their full support on Tuesday for Iran against any potential US attack amid rising tensions between Tehran and Washington.
In a statement, the Badr Organization said that it will support Iran if it comes under attack, stressing its backing for Tehran in the face of what it described as “American-Israeli arrogance.”
“We call on our mujahideen brothers in the East and West of the world (…) to prepare for a comprehensive war in support of and solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Abu Hussein al-Hamidawi, secretary-general of Iraq’s Kataib Hezbollah, said in a statement.
The Harakat al-Nujaba movement also said that it is ready to take part in responding to any attack against Iran, according to the local Shafaq News Agency.
“Any attack on Iran would drag the region into a broader confrontation that would include the Gulf states and Iraq,” Iraqi media quoted Firas al-Yasser, a member of the group’s political bureau, as saying.
He expected the Iranian response to be “unconventional,” both in terms of the nature of the targets and the bases that could be hit.
“The role of the resistance in Iraq will be pivotal in defending the security and stability of the region,” al-Yasser said, arguing that “weakening Iran represents a preparatory phase for targeting Iraq in the future.”
Fears are growing inside Iran of a potential US strike amid rising tensions between the two countries following anti-government protests in the country.
The US administration says that all options, including military action, remain on the table in dealing with Tehran, as the US and Israel seek to change Iran’s ruling system.
Iranian officials have warned that any US attack would draw a “swift and comprehensive” response.
