MARIB, Yemen

At least 14 civilians, including children, were killed on Saturday when Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacked a gas station in eastern Yemen.

"Houthi terrorist militia targeted a petrol station in Rawdha neighborhood in #Marib city with a ballistic missile, led to the 14 deaths and dozens wounded," the Marib Governorate said on Twitter.

The attack also caused material damage to public property, it added.

Houthi rebels have yet to comment on the attack.

Yemen has been beset by violence and chaos since 2014, when Iran-aligned Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including the capital Sana'a.

The crisis escalated in 2015 when the Saudi-led coalition launched a devastating air campaign aimed at rolling back Houthi territorial gains.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the conflict in Yemen has so far claimed over 233,000 lives.
