A ceremony in the Egyptian capital Saturday commemorated the 102nd anniversary of the Ottoman naval victory over invading Allied powers in World War I.

The ceremony was held at a Turkish martyrs’ cemetery in eastern Cairo with the participation of Turkish mission chief Ali Riza Guney along with other officials from the Turkish Embassy as well as other Turkish citizens.

The Battle of Canakkale was a campaign that eventually turned the tide in favor of the Ottoman Empire fighting against Allied powers.

The 1915 battle took place in the Canakkale Strait in the Canakkale province's Gelibolu (Gallipoli) district.
