Video shows missile strikes on Iran originating from Bahrain
Verified video appears to show first strikes from Persian Gulf country against Iran since war began
ISTANBUL
Ballistic missiles appear to have been launched from Bahrain toward Iran using US-made equipment, according to a report by The New York Times on Friday.
It said a video, posted March 7 on social media, and verified by the newspaper, shows two missiles fired from northern Bahrain toward Iran, possibly marking the first instance of an attack on Iran originating from a Persian Gulf country since the US-Israeli war against Iran began in late February.
Analysts cited in the report said the launcher, visible in the footage, appears to be a US-made M142 HIMARS rocket system.
It is unclear whether the missiles were launched by US or Bahraini forces.
Bahrain said in a statement to The New York Times that its military "has not participated in any offensive operations." The Pentagon declined to comment on the report.
Iran also targeted the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in the Bahraini capital of Manama, destroying two satellite communications terminals and several large buildings.
Bahrain said Friday that it destroyed 115 missiles and 191 drones since the launch of Iranian attacks on its territory.
Since Israel and the US launched joint attacks against Iran on Feb. 28, so far killing 1,300 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, hostilities have escalated.
Tehran retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries that are home to US military assets, resulting in casualties and damage to infrastructure and affecting global markets and aviation.
