France found guilty of mistreating foreign baby detainee

ANKARA

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Thursday found France guilty of mistreatment of a foreign baby while the mother was detained.

A Guinean mother sued the French state for mistreatment while she was in a detention center awaiting her expulsion from the country.

The Guinean mother and her over seven-month-old baby were detained for nine days in 2021 following local authorities of the Bas-Rhin prefecture decided to deport them to Spain.

The ECHR ruled that the detainees were subjected to "inhuman treatment," citing the baby’s age, conditions, and duration of detention.

The Court fined France to pay €19,000 (about $20,974) in total to the complainant.
