Multiple law enforcement agencies responded Thursday to reports of an active shooter and vehicle ramming incident at the Temple Israel synagogue in the US state of Michigan, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office announced.

Michigan State Police said the incident was reported at around 12.30 pm local time (1630GMT) at the synagogue on Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield, with emergency personnel clearing the building.

FBI Director Kash Patel said agency personnel were on the scene alongside partners, describing the situation as an "apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter incident." The FBI Detroit Field Office said it was responding and would provide updates.

Federal, state, county and local police were continuing to secure the area, Michigan State Police added, indicating that the scene was "not safe" and urging the public to stay away.

The Jewish Federation of Detroit said its agencies in the area are under a precautionary lockdown, asking community members to refrain from traveling to the area.

No information about casualties was disclosed.
