Türkiye, with a population of more than 84.6 million people, ranked 18th among 195 countries in terms of population size, the country’s statistical office said on Wednesday.

The figure constitutes 1.1% of the world’s total population.

This year, the world population is expected to reach 8 billion by November 2022, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) said, citing UN estimates.

Last year, the figure was $7.8 billion, with China having the highest population of 1.4 billion, followed by India with 1.3 billion and the US with 333 million people.

These three countries constituted 40.3% of the world's total population.

According to the UN population estimates, when the “proportion of 0-17 age group child population in the total population was analyzed by countries, the country with the highest proportion of child population was Niger with 56.4% in 2021,” the TurkStat said.

Niger was followed by Mali with 53.8% and Chad with 53.2%.

The country with the lowest proportion of child population was Singapore with 14.9%, followed by Japan and South Korea with 15% each, and Italy with 15.7%.

The proportion of Türkiye’s child population with 26.9% was lower than that of the world child population average of 30% but higher than that of the EU member countries.
