Turkey: Stranded shepherd, flock rescued from deep snow

HAKKARI, Turkey

A shepherd and his flock, stranded by harsh weather conditions in a mountainous area at 2,800 meters (9,186 feet) altitude in southeastern Turkey, were rescued by snow removal teams on Thursday.

Hamdi Ertus said that while he was tending his flock near the village of Kavakli in the Hakkari province, a heavy snow started, stranding him in the foothills of Mt. Sivekur.

The road was blocked due to heavy snow and blizzards, and he had been trying to make his way out for two days, he added.

Local snow removal teams sent to the region were finally able to open up the road and rescue the shepherd and his flock.

The teams also accompanied them back to their village, making sure they were safe and sound.
