ISLAMABAD
A Pakistani anti-terrorist court on Wednesday sentenced two men to 12 years in prison each for acts of cannibalism in the north eastern Punjab province.
The two brothers, 35 year-old Mohammad Arif and 40 year-old Mohammad Farman had been arrested for digging up graves and eating the newly-buried bodies in April in the small remote Darya Khan town.
The police found the cooked remains of a newly-buried body. This is the second time that they have been sentenced for cannibalsim, the first was in 2011 and were released only last year.
The two remained out of sight for some time after their release but returned to their home in February and again engaged in acts of cannibalism, the police said.
Since there are no specific laws to deal with cannibalism in Pakistan, the two brothers were arrested for desecrating a human body in 2011. This time, however, due to public outcry, they were tried in a special anti-terrorist court.
The two had spent most of their jail term in King Edwards Medical College in Lahore, where they were examined by neurophysicians.
