EDGEWATER, New Jersey
Hundreds of people have been displaced after a massive fire engulfed a luxury apartment complex in the state of New Jersey, in the U.S. on Wednesday, reported local media.
The fire at the Avalon apartment complex in the Edgewater along the edge of the Hudson River started at around 4:30 p.m. (GMT2130), leaving much of the complex completely consumed by the flames after several hours.
No deaths or major injuries were reported.
The 400-unit complex was evacuated immediately after the fire started, with 160 people being sheltered at a local community center, Edgewater mayor Michael McPartland told reporters.
He said a local state of emergency had been declared, and Edgewater schools would be closed Thursday.
The reason for the fire remains unknown.
Another major fire at the site of the same apartment complex engulfed the area in 2000, destroying nine homes.
