Marriott International's president and CEO Arne Sorenson died after a nearly two-year battle with stage two pancreatic cancer, the hotel chain announced Tuesday.
The news came weeks after the company said Feb. 2 that Sorenson would temporarily reduce his schedule to facilitate more demanding treatment for the cancer that was diagnosed in May 2019.
"Arne was an exceptional executive – but more than that – he was an exceptional human being," said Executive Chairman J.W. Marriott Jr.
Sorenson was Marriott's third CEO and the first without the Marriott surname.
"A visionary leader, Mr. Sorenson put the company on a strong growth trajectory that included the $13-billion acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts," the company said.
Executives Stephanie Linnartz and Tony Capuano, who filled in during Sorenson's absence, will maintain their current responsibilities until a new CEO is appointed -- expected to be named in the next two weeks.
