A total of 430 journalists were killed between 2007 and 2012, according to a report by UNESCO.
Then number of deaths rose from 59 in 2007 to 121 in 2012, said the report published on Tuesday.
"Uprisings in part of the Arab region" were behind a rise in killings in conflict-zones, especially in Syria, which is considered to be the deadliest place for journalists to work, it said.
However, although conflict zones remain the most dangerous places for journalists, between 2007 and 2011 more were killed outside of such areas and impunity for the crimes remains the norm, noted the report.
As the Syrian civil war enters its third year, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) ranked war-torn Syria as the most deadly country for journalists in 2013.
At least 29 journalists were killed and 60 were abducted in Syria in 2013, the CPJ declared.
