Turkey on Wednesday reported 8,642 new coronavirus cases, including 664 symptomatic patients, and 95 more fatalities.

The overall case count has now passed 2.55 million, with the death toll at 27,093, according to the Health Ministry.

Some 7,903 more patients won their battle against the virus, bringing the total number of recoveries past 2.44 million.

The number of COVID-19 patients in critical condition stands at 1,308, the latest figures showed.

Over 31 million tests have been done in Turkey to date, including 135,867 more over the past day.

"I got my second dose," said Health Minister Fahrettin Koca on Twitter, with a photo of him getting his second jab nearly a month after the first.

On Jan. 14 Turkey kicked off a mass COVID-19 vaccination campaign starting with healthcare workers.

Since last December, Turkey has had curfews on weeknights and weekends to curb the spread of the virus.

Since December 2019, when it first appeared, the pandemic has claimed more than 2.34 million lives in 192 countries and regions.

Over 107.04 million cases have been reported worldwide, with recoveries now above 59.88 million, according to figures compiled by the US' Johns Hopkins University.

The US, India, and Brazil remain the worst-hit countries in terms of infections.
