Western Balkans countries continue to see sharp rises in daily COVID-19 cases

BELGRADE, Serbia 

The countries of the Western Balkans continue to see rapid rises in daily COVID-19 cases.

In the past 24 hours Bosnia and Herzegovina registered over 920 new cases as well as 14 deaths.

The country has so far registered 35,389 cases while 25,560 people have recovered and 1,017 people died.

Meanwhile, Croatia reported 1,424 new cases, as infections hit a new daily record.

The National Civil Protection Headquarters announced that currently, 622 patients are in hospital, and 38 are on a respirator. The number of active cases of infection is 6,459.

Eleven people also died in the past 24 hours.

Since Feb. 25, when the first coronavirus infection was recorded in Croatia, 28,287 people have been infected and 393 have died.

A total of 21,435 people have recovered, while 24,242 people are currently in self-isolation.

Meanwhile, Slovenia declared a 9.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m. curfew as of Tuesday after a rapid increase in COVID-19 cases.

A record 1,503 infections were confirmed in Slovenia on Tuesday, up considerably from the previous daily high of 898.

Interior Minister Ales Hojs called on the public to cancel tourist trips and prohibited crossings between the country’s 12 regions.

Slovenia, with a population of 2 million, once again declared an epidemic on Monday after the number of cases climbed to 15,982 and the death toll reached 200.

Additional measures have also been taken in Serbia, where the number of daily cases has shot up in recent days.

Masks are obligatory in open areas and local governments have been given the authority to ban events where more than 30 people will gather.

Serbia has so far registered 36,608 cases and 780 deaths.
