Israel’s foreign minister announced late Monday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus.

"I’ve tested positive for COVID-19. I feel great because I’m vaccinated," Yair Lapid said on Twitter.

Lapid also urged Israelis to get vaccinated and wear a mask.

With Israel seeing a surge in coronavirus cases recently and the omicron variant engulfing the country, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Twitter that between two to four million citizens in total could contract COVID-19 during the current wave.

His remarks came after Monday's Cabinet meeting at which Lapid was also present.

Israel’s former prime minister and current opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu was among those who wished Lapid a speedy recovery.

"Wishing a full recovery for Foreign Minister Yair Lapid. Health comes before all," Netanyahu said on Twitter.
