India’s coronavirus cases crossed the 7 million mark Sunday with more than 74,000 additional infections, according to the Health Ministry.

A total of 74,383 cases were reported in the past 24 hours, with 918 more fatalities, taking the country's death toll to 108,334.

The ministry also said the recoveries have crossed 6 million.

“India crosses the landmark milestone of more than 60 lakh [6 million] Recoveries. The 5 top States with maximum caseload (61% Active Cases) are also contributing more than half (54.3%) of the total Recoveries,” said Health Ministry on Twitter.

India now ranks the second country to register 7 million cases and is approaching figures close to that of the US, which, according to John Hopkins University has recorded 7.7 million cases.

In the number of coronavirus-related fatalities, India currently ranks third globally.

Health experts believe India may surpass the US, the worst-affected country worldwide, in severity of the pandemic.
