At least three people have died in Shanghai due to COVID-19-related symptoms since March 1 when China’s metropolitan was hit by an intense coronavirus wave, authorities said Monday.

The deceased, aged 89, 91 and 91, were unvaccinated, said Wu Qianyu, an official from the Shanghai health authority, according to daily Global Times.

“After admission to designated hospitals, their conditions worsened, and the direct causes of death were underlying diseases,” he added. Two of the deceased were women.

Metropolitan Shanghai, home to over 26 million people, is under lockdown for more than two weeks due to an intense coronavirus wave.

The city has reported 24,529 confirmed domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases since Feb. 26.

Lockdown has also triggered sharp reaction by local residents on Chinese social media platforms.

The total number of virus cases in China has risen to 185,035, with 4,641 deaths.
