IZMIR
Eight-year old leukemia patient Melis Akbas, who became a national phenomenon as Turkey rallies for her treatment, underwent a bone marrow transplant in the western city of Izmir.
According to the statement of Prof. Dr Savas Kansoy, head of the pediatrics department at Ege University where the girl was treated, they did not face difficulty in finding a suitable bone marrow donor in Germany and transporting it to Turkey.
Noting that the latest tests indicate that Melis' body has accepted the transplanted bone marrow, Kansoy added, "Melis will be released from the hospital within 10 days if there aren't any complications."
Melis became a national symbol of the fight against leukimia cancer in Turkey as famous figures rallied for her to receive treatment.
