JERUSALEM
The Israeli army said Monday that its troops had struck as many as 35 targets in the Gaza Strip, including two mosques, since Sunday midnight.
Army spokesman Avichay Adraee said on his Twitter account that the army had also targeted two Gaza activists who were about to fire rockets at Israeli territories.
Among the targets that had been hit were two mosques that had been used for storing military equipment and planning "terrorist activities," Adraee alleged.
Israel resumed airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday following the collapse of indirect, Egypt-hosted talks aimed at hammering out a durable ceasefire deal.
While Israel accused Hamas of breaking a temporary ceasefire with a rocket barrage, the Palestinian faction accused the self-proclaimed Jewish state of attempting to derail the truce talks in Cairo.
At least 2121 Palestinians have been killed and more than 10,800 others injured in relentless Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since July 7.
Over the same period, at least 68 Israelis – 64 soldiers and four civilians – have been killed, according to Israeli figures.
The Palestinian death toll from the Israeli offensive alone has surpassed the combined total fatalities from two past major operations - including 2008/9's operation "Cast Lead" which killed at least 1500 Palestinians in three weeks.
