IZMİR
Istanbul club Besiktas are now on top of the Turkish Spor Toto Super League thanks to a favorable goal average as they hammered Mersin Idmanyurdu 5-2 in their season opener Sunday night.
Scorers for Besiktas were Turkish striker Cenk Tosun who had two goals in the first half and one in the second for a 3-1 lead. Midfielder Olcay Sahan and winger Kerim Frei added two for the 5-2 win.
This win is Besiktas's 1,000th victory in league play.
Turkish football's top division went underway on Friday night as Fenerbahce hosted and defeated Eskisehirspor 2-0. Senegalese forward Moussa Sow and Brazilian center forward Fernandao were the scorers for the Yellow Canaries.
Defending league champions, Galatasaray drew against Medicana Sivasspor 2-2 in an away match on Saturday night.
Home team Sivasspor’s winger Aatif Chahechouhe scored two goals. Galatasaray narrowed the gap when Turkish striker Burak Yilmaz found the net in the 60th minute. In 80’, German forward Lukas Podolski equalized with a header.
Antalyaspor won against Medipol Basaksehir 3-2 in an away match. Antalyaspor's Cameroonian star forward Samuel Eto'o scored two goals. Eto’o’s performance made the headlines in Turkish media, many commenting on how the 34-year-old “still got it”.
