Yellow thunderstorm warning issued as UK heatwave peaks
Extreme heat could trigger torrential downpours, flash flooding, large hail, lightning

LONDON
A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued as the UK heatwave is set to intensify, with temperatures expected to reach up to 34C (93F) on Saturday.
The alert covers parts of northern England, the Midlands and Wales from Saturday to Sunday.
Forecasters say the extreme heat and humidity could trigger torrential downpours, flash flooding, large hail and lightning.
Ahead of the storms, Friday will bring widespread hot weather, with parts of the UK forecast to hit 32C (90F).
The UK Health Security Agency has extended an amber heat-health alert for England until Monday, warning of a strain on health and social care services, particularly for older adults and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Although heatwave conditions are likely to persist into the weekend, cooler air is forecast to move in from the west by Sunday.
“Our findings show that heat can result in serious health outcomes across the population,” said Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA. “It is therefore important to check on friends, family and neighbors who are more vulnerable and to take sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.”
Temperatures in the south and east are expected to ease slightly, with a further dip forecast for Monday.
However, meteorologists say the heat may return later next week.
