UK braces for icy conditions after storm
Yellow warning for snow and ice will be in force for large parts of Scotland, England and Northern Ireland
LONDON
Parts of the UK are expected to face snow and icy conditions over the weekend as communities continue to deal with the aftermath of Storm Goretti.
A yellow warning for snow and ice will be in force for large parts of Scotland, England and Northern Ireland, according to the country's weather agency, the Met Office.
Yellow warnings mean people should expect possible travel delays, power cuts and a risk of injury from slips and falls.
Forecasters warned that a widespread risk of ice could cause disruption, and that the combination of melting snow and rain could increase the risk of flooding in some areas.
David Morgan, the flood duty manager at the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, said: “As temperatures rise following recent cold conditions, thaw of lying snow from Sunday onwards will increase the risk of flooding.”
Storm Goretti caused widespread disruption across the UK on Friday, leaving tens of thousands of homes without electricity and severely affecting air, rail and road travel, as fresh weather warnings were issued.
Around 57,000 households were without power early Friday, most of them in southwest England, including about 43,400 in Cornwall, as well as parts of the West Midlands, according to National Grid.
