MADRID

A train derailment in northwestern Spain on Friday killed three people and injured many more, Spanish media reported.

The accident took place Friday morning in O Porrino, a town in the Galicia region. The train had departed from Vigo, Galicia and was bound for Oporto, Portugal.

One of the dead is said to be the train’s conductor. According to Spanish news agency EFE, some of the injured are in a serious condition.

Approximately 60 passengers were on board the three-wagon train.

According to first reports, the train derailed upon arrival at O Porrino's station. The back two wagons stayed upright but the first ended up significantly titled to one side.

Adif, Spain’s state-owned railway company, said it had opened an investigation.
