The daily coronavirus cases in Russia on Saturday remained below 7,000 for the second day in a row.

Over the past day, 6,852 new cases were confirmed in the country, taking the country's tally to 627,646, the emergency task force said in a daily report.

Meanwhile, recoveries reached 393,352 after 9,200 people were discharged from hospital.

With 188 more fatalities, the death toll from the virus reached 8,969.

According to assessment by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the country "got through the most dangerous stage of the epidemic and the inconvenience and complexity of forced restrictions and self-isolation".

The country has started clinical trials of several vaccines against coronavirus and approved two medications for the treatment, which showed efficiency in 90% of cases.

Since originating in China last December, the pandemic has claimed over 494,400 lives in 188 countries and regions.

More than 9.81 million cases have been reported worldwide, while over 4.95 million patients have recovered so far, according to figures compiled by the US' Johns Hopkins University.
