Romania scrambles 2 fighter jets after fresh Russian strikes near border
No national airspace violations were detected, says Romania's Defense Ministry
LONDON
Two Romanian F-16 jets were scrambled following new Russian drone strikes reported last night in Ukraine near the Danube River, which forms the border with Romania, Bucharest’s Defense Ministry said Saturday.
Two F-16 fighter jets took off to monitor the situation, and the locals were warned via RoAlert, a system allowing cell broadcast messages to alert the public in case of an emergency, Radio Romania International reported, citing the ministry.
According to a ministry statement, no national airspace violations were detected during the drone strikes.
It added that Romania's military stays alert at all times and ensures strict surveillance of the country's air, maritime, and land space.
Due to the strike, Danube ferry crossing between the Romanian town of Isaccea and the Ukrainian village of Orlivka were suspended and traffic was rerouted, according to the report.
Earlier this week, the Defense Ministry announced that the country scrambled fighter jets when a drone breached its airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine near the border.
