An immigrant camp was evacuated Tuesday by police in eastern France.

The camp in Strasbourg, hosting 200 mostly European immigrants, has been the subject of debate between the municipality and the governorship, according to French news website, Sud-Ouest.

Police raided the camp which was built in May on Place de l'Etoile square to host the immigrants from mostly Albania, Romania and Macedonia.

The municipality was refusing to evacuate the site because of their lack of accommodation solutions. The governorship said the camp was located on land that is out of its responsibility area.

Mayor Jeanne Barseghian deplored having limited means to provide accommodation to immigrants and homeless individuals. She said the municipality decided to sue the state for not fulfilling its duty.

Barseghian urged elected representatives and charities to support an initiative to provide accommodations.
