Most Spaniards oppose US Israel attack on Iran, survey finds
About 68% reject military action, while majority backs Spain’s refusal to support operation or allow use of US bases
GENEVA
A majority of Spaniards oppose the US and Israeli attack on Iran, according to a new survey released on Friday, reflecting widespread public skepticism toward the expanding Middle East conflict.
The flash poll conducted by pollster 40dB. for Spanish outlets El Pais and Cadena SER found that 68.2% of respondents reject the military campaign, while 23.2% support it.
Opposition to the military action goes beyond traditional political divides, although it is strongest among supporters of Spain’s governing Socialist Party (PSOE) and the left wing alliance Podemos/Sumar, where rejection approaches 90%.
Support for the attack is highest among voters of the far-right Vox party, with 52.8% backing the campaign, while 36.2% of voters aligned with the conservative Popular Party (PP) support it.
The survey also showed broad backing for key decisions taken by Spain’s government in response to the conflict. About 57% approve the government’s decision not to support the US and Israel militarily, while 53% support the refusal to allow US forces to use military bases in Spain for operations linked to the war.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s handling of the crisis is approved by 42% of respondents, compared with 18% support for opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo’s response.
The poll indicated that the conflict is drawing significant public attention in Spain. Nearly 80% of respondents said they are closely following the news about the attacks and the broader regional escalation.
Concern was the most frequently cited emotion, mentioned by 36% of respondents.
The survey, based on 500 online interviews conducted Thursday, has an estimated margin of error of 4.38%.
