Merkel hails EU-China cooperation for multilateralism
German Chancellor urges reform of UN Security Council, reactivating G20 to reflect true balance of power in world
BERLIN
German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday hailed closer cooperation between the European Union and China for a multilateral world order.
Merkel warned against unilateralist policies in international arena and urged the strengthening of the multilateral system.
“In today’s discussions, I really had the impression that each of the participants want to bring their contribution so that this [multilateral] system can be further developed,” she said at a joint news conference with the leaders of France and China following a meeting in Paris.
“That means reform at the UN Security Council, further development of the IMF, reforming the WTO … that also means reactivating the G20,” she added.
Merkel met with French President Emmanuel Macron and Chinese President Xi Jinping, ahead of an EU-China summit April in Brussels.
EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker also attended the meeting.
