LONDON
French President Emmanuel Macron has welcomed the US Supreme Court ruling that struck down tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, saying it highlights the importance of counterbalances to power in democracies.
Speaking at the annual agricultural salon in Paris on Saturday, Macron said: “It is not bad to have a Supreme Court and, therefore, the rule of law. It is good to have power and counterweights to power in democracies.”
The court ruled Friday that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), on which the tariffs put into effect by Trump were based, did not grant the president the authority to impose tariffs.
The 6-3 decision emphasized that the authority to impose customs duties belongs to Congress.
Trump, in a news conference held after the ruling, said it was "deeply disappointing," and he was ashamed of some members of the court.
"The good news is that there are methods, practices, statutes, and authorities, as recognized by the entire court in this terrible decision—and also as recognized by Congress," said Trump.
Macron also addressed France’s response to Trump’s recent 10% global tariffs, saying the country would carefully consider the consequences and adapt as needed.
He emphasized that France aims to continue exporting key products, including agricultural goods, luxury items, fashion, and aeronautical equipment.
He called for a calm and measured approach, adding that “the fairest rule is reciprocity” rather than being subject to unilateral decisions.
