The number of centenarians in Italy has continued to rise sharply, with over 2,000 people reaching the age of 100 in 2025, most of them women, The Guardian reported Saturday.

Italy has 23,548 residents aged 100 or older, up from 21,211 in 2024, according to the latest data from the national statistics agency Istat.

The number of centenarians in the country has more than doubled since 2009, Istat added.

Women make up 82.6% of those turning 100 this year and also lead among Italy’s 724 semi-supercentenarians and 19 supercentenarians.

Lucia Laura Sangenito, from southern Campania, will mark her 115th birthday on Nov. 22 becoming Italy’s oldest woman and Europe’s third oldest, after the UK’s 116-year-old Ethel Caterham and France’s Marie-Rose Tessier, who turned 115 in May.

The centenarian population is rising rapidly across the EU, with those aged 100 or older expected to approach half a million by 2050, up from 96,600 in 2019.

In Italy, Molise leads in centenarians relative to its population, followed by the Aosta Valley and Liguria, Istat reported.
