LONDON

Heads of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom spoke over the phone to discuss the situation at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Iran.

In a statement, the IAEA said the phone call between its Director General Rafael Grossi and Rosatom's Alexey Likhachev came after "recent concerning reports" about military activity near the power plant.

"In accordance with the seven indispensable pillars on nuclear safety and security, DG Grossi recalled that no military action should put at risk the physical integrity and safety of NPPs (Nuclear Power Plants) and their operating staff, who must be able to carry out their vital work in safe conditions," the statement said.

Last week, Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, cited by the Tasnim news agency, said a projectile struck an area near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.

US-Israeli strikes on Iran began on Feb. 28, with Tehran retaliating through repeated drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
