Trade unions in Greece on Wednesday expressed solidarity with the Global Sumud Flotilla, which is sailing toward Gaza despite threats of attack from the Israeli army.

Seventy-six unions and workers' organizations issued a joint statement calling for the safe passage of the flotilla and warning that any assault could spark mass protests across Greece.

In a statement, the unions stressed the need to immediately end the blockade and what they described as the "genocide" in Gaza.

The unions warned that the Israeli state must not even contemplate endangering those on board and said any attack, no matter how small, would prompt mass protests.

They also urged the Greek government to take necessary measures to ensure the protection of the flotilla, describing it as a peaceful mission in line with international law.

Additionally, they called for sanctions on Israel, including an arms embargo and the suspension of commercial, military, and political ties, in line with UN and International Court of Justice decisions.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, an international humanitarian effort to deliver aid to Gaza, announced that it is less than 90 nautical miles (166 kilometers) away from the Israel-blockaded Gaza Strip.

The mission brings together activists, politicians, and volunteers from multiple countries.
