Greek shipyard workers on Wednesday extended their strike over a fatal work accident at one of the country's major dry docks.

The accident occurred on Monday during repair work at the shipyard in Perama when a propeller being lifted by a crane reportedly fell during transport, leaving one person dead and two others injured.

“It is our imperative duty not to remain silent, not to allow yet another employer crime to be covered up,” the Attica Metal and Shipbuilding Industry Union said in a statement.

On Tuesday, workers gathering at the shipyard's central gate upon the union's call protested against the accident.

“We call for a new 24-hour strike from this morning on and a mass gathering in the evening to protest the accident and demand stricter security regulations in the shipyards,” the union added.
