Germany: Car crashes into gate of Merkel's office

BERLIN

A car crashed into the outer gate of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's office on Wednesday, causing alarm in the German capital.

Multiple police units rushed to the scene, cordoning off the area in front of the Chancellery.

A 54-year-old driver was taken into custody for questioning, Berlin police said in a statement.

The crash had caused only minor property damage.

Local media reported that it was likely a "politically motivated” attack as the driver wrote "Stop Globalization Politics" on the right side of the car.

“You damned children and old people killers,” was written on the other side of the car with a white paint.

Merkel and the government's ministers were at the Chancellery for a weekly Cabinet meeting at the time of the incident.
