Country reports 367 new fatalities, bringing tally to 23,660, ahead of easing of lockdown starting May 11

France sees rise in coronavirus deaths, infections

PARIS 

The death toll in France due to coronavirus rose to 23,660 on Tuesday, according to the French Health Ministry.

The latest ministry data included at least 367 new fatalities, bringing the total fatalities in hospitals to date to 14,810 and the total fatalities in nursing homes to 8,850.

Hospitalizations dropped on Tuesday, with the number standing at 27,484, and the number of those in intensive care fell to 4,387.

Since the start of the outbreak, the death toll in the country has reached 23,660.

The total number of registered coronavirus cases rose to 197,589, as 1,520 more people tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours.

France's lockdown will continue until May 11, after which schools will be able to gradually reopen, followed by cafes, restaurants, and bars.

The pandemic has killed more than 215,000 people worldwide, with the number of cases totaling over 3.09 million and some 918,000 recoveries, according to the US’ Johns Hopkins University.
