Former Albanian President Bujar Nishani died on Saturday at age 55, the incumbent president announced.

Nishani had been receiving treatment for a lung infection and other health problems at a hospital in Germany for a few weeks.

"President Nishani will always be remembered as a personality with the rare values of a leader with integrity and vision," Albanian President Ilir Meta said on Twitter.

Born in Durres, Albania on Sept. 29, 1966, Nishani graduated from the Skanderbeg Military Academy and earned a law degree from Tirana University.

He was Albania's president from 2012 to 2017 and served as the interior and justice minister before that.
