The Czech Defense Ministry has approved the purchase of 44 Leopard 2A8 command and combat tanks from Germany, with the first delivery expected in 2028.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry said the acquisition, including “Czech customization” to adapt the vehicles for the country’s armed forces, will cost 32.8 billion koruna ($1.6 billion).

An additional 5 billion koruna will be set aside for inflation and currency reserves. The deal, endorsed by the defense minister’s council, still requires final approval from the government.

Prague announced plans in June last year to join a German-led procurement program for Leopard 2A8 tanks.

At the time, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said the country aimed to acquire up to 77 tanks in six modifications for 52.1 billion koruna.

Defense Minister Jana Cernochova said in February that she intended to finalize the deal before the end of her term.

“Tanks are an essential part of a heavy brigade. By concluding the agreement to acquire the state-of-the-art Leopard 2A8, we are not only fulfilling our commitment to NATO allies but also addressing a long-standing shortfall in our own defense capability,” Cernochova said.
