COVID-19: Death toll in Netherlands surpasses 1,600

ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands 

The death toll from the novel coronavirus in the Netherlands has risen to 1,651, authorities announced Saturday.

The overall number of cases in the country rose to 16,627, including with 904 recently confirmed cases, according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.

Some 336 people were also admitted to hospitals, bringing the total number of those under treatment to 6,622.

After first appearing in Wuhan, China last December, the novel coronavirus has spread to at least 181 countries and regions.

Data compiled by U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University shows worldwide infections surging past 1.1 million, with more than 60,800 deaths. Over 233,800 people have recovered so far.
