LONDON

A new multibillion-pound theme park, set to open in 2031, is aimed to transform Bedford into one of Europe’s biggest entertainment hubs, promising thousands of jobs and offering a major boost to the UK economy, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Wednesday.

The project, led by global entertainment giant Universal, will be located at the former Kempston Hardwick brickworks, just off the A421, on a 192-hectare (476-acre) site.

The development is expected to draw 8.5 million visitors annually, making it the largest tourist attraction in Britain.

The complex will include not only the theme park but also a 500-bed hotel, retail, dining, and entertainment facilities.

Keir Starmer called the new venture “transformative” for Bedford and a key part of the government’s “Plan for Change,” which aims to stimulate both local and national growth.

He highlighted the creation of approximately 28,000 new jobs in construction, artificial intelligence, tourism, and other sectors.

“This is our plan for change in action,” Starmer said, emphasizing the long-term benefits for workers across the country.

“It’s not just about numbers; it’s about securing real opportunities for people in our country. Together, we are building a brighter future for the UK, getting people into work, and ensuring our economy remains strong and competitive.”

The government estimates that the £50 billion (nearly $65 billion) project will create 20,000 jobs during construction and an additional 8,000 roles once the park opens.

Local government leaders have strongly backed the initiative, and there are plans for significant investments in surrounding infrastructure to ensure the site is well-connected and easily accessible.

However, the project’s success depends on obtaining planning permission, with the government facing pressure to speed up major construction projects and reduce legal challenges.
