Four people were killed after a small plane crashed in Austria's Lungau region on Thursday afternoon, police said on Friday.
The Cirrus SR-20 aircraft had departed from the Croatian capital Zagreb shortly before 2:00 pm, with Salzburg designated as its destination.
Around 3:45 pm, the plane crashed into a wooded area on Passeggen, a mountain ridge in the municipality of St. Andra in Lungau, according to police.
The victims have not been clearly identified at this point, and the cause of the crash remains unknown.
The local fire department, in its statement, mentioned that several witnesses observed the crash. Promptly, they dialed 911, initiating the rescue efforts.
The plane was discovered overturned, having crashed into the ground.
The Salzburg State Office of Criminal Investigation has taken charge of the investigation and called in an aviation accident expert. The public prosecutor's office has mandated the seizure of the plane wreckage for further examination and ordered autopsies on the victims.
