ANKARA

Strikes, demonstrations, and protests for the environment continued across the globe in October, with protesters demanding more decisive action to tackle climate change.

Activists and citizens continued online campaigns and street protests while keeping socially distant due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Events included the Fridays for Future protests launched in 2018 by Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg and campaigns worldwide against anti-environmental practices and attitudes, including those held as part of COP26 and G20 Leaders' Summit.

Below is a timeline of protests and demonstrations compiled by Anadolu Agency:


Oct. 1:

- On the first Fridays for Future strike of the month, climate activists and environmental protesters continue to raise awareness about climate change in efforts supported by nonprofits.

- Climate activists in Italy's Milan city hold protests amid the Pre-COP26 meeting in the city.


Oct. 4:

- Environmental activists, accompanied by farmers, hold a demonstration outside of Japan's Embassy in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, demanding the Japanese government to withdraw its financial support from the coal-fired power plant project in the West Java province.

- Greenpeace activists block Shell refinery in Rotterdam port, the Netherlands, to protest the media and sponsorships of oil and gas companies.


Oct. 8:

- On the second Fridays for Future strike of October, climate activists and environmental protesters continue to raise awareness about climate change and environmental issues.

- Extinction Rebellion activists hold a protest in front of the government building in Finland's capital Helsinki, demanding the government to formally declare an "environmental emergency."


Oct. 10:

- Thousands of people march in Brussels to raise awareness on climate change prior to the UN COP26 conference in Glasgow on Oct. 31-Nov. 12.


Oct. 11:

- A group of Greenpeace activists stages a protest at Downing Street, urging the UK government to cancel its oil drilling project.


Oct. 14:

- Protesters, gathering outside of the White House, demand President Joe Biden to "declare a climate emergency" by rejecting fossil fuel projects.


Oct. 15:

- Fridays for Future holds the third strike of the month with climate activists and environmental protesters raising awareness about climate change and environmental issues.


Oct. 16:

- Masses gather at Trafalgar Square and march to the British Prime Minister's Office to protest the killing of hundreds of dolphins on Denmark's Faroe Islands as activists also call for sanctions on the islands.


Oct. 18:

- Thousands, including environmental activists, protest President Nayib Bukele in El Salvador.


Oct. 22:

- During the fourth Fridays for Future strike in October, climate activists and environmental protesters continue to raise awareness about climate change and environmental issues.

- Thousands of protesters march through the streets of Berlin calling on political parties to take strong action to combat climate change.


Oct. 26:

- Young activists in Norway -- which owes its high level of wealth to oil and natural gas exports -- are greatly worried over their future and demand abolition of law allowing the production of fossil fuel causing environmental pollution.


Oct. 27:

- Supporters of the Animal Rebellion movement climb UK's Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and Home Office building in London, demanding support for a plant-based food system at COP26.


Oct. 29:

- During the last Fridays for Future strike in October, climate and environmental activists continue protesting for action on climate change and the environment, demanding more action from world leaders.

- In the run-up to the COP26 climate summit in the Scottish city of Glasgow, a large crowd of activists gather outside of the London headquarters of the British financial services company Standard Chartered to demand an urgent end to the bank’s financial support for fossil fuel projects and activities.


Oct. 30

- Climate activists and environmental protesters led by Fridays for Future movement hold a demonstration in the Italian capital Rome amid the G20 Leaders' Summit.
