ScottishPower Renewables contracted French cable supplier Nexans and Netherlands-based subsea service provider DeepOcean to fabricate and install the export cables for its £2.5 billion offshore wind farm project, East Anglia ONE in the North Sea, the company announced on Tuesday.
Under the agreement, Nexans and DeepOcean will lay two 85 kilometer long submarine cables with embedded fiber optics.
Delivery of the cables will begin in summer 2018. The cables will carry electricity from the 714 megawatt wind farm. The contract will create 150 jobs.
East Anglia ONE will generate enough renewable energy to power 500,000 homes per year, when completed in 2020.
'Preparations are now underway for the initial work onshore, and we are in advanced planning stages for the offshore work, which will kick-off in 2018,' said Jonathan Cole, managing director of offshore wind at ScottishPower Renewables.
